Peranakan Taster Dinner Talk

Join Peranakan chef Lionel Chee on a trail of discovery as he demonstrates how to cook and shares the secret stories behind his family’s heritage dishes which will be delivered to your home for you to savor as he speaks on Zoom. Each bento will come with traditional Nyonya dishes like Chicken Curry Kapitan, Chap Chye, Nasi Ulam and a Peranakan-inspired cocktail drink! Invite a few friends over for an evening of great food, fun and cultural exploration!

About Chef Lionel Chee
A graduate of Les Roches Hotel School in Switzerland, Lionel Chee spent over 10 years in the hotel industry and 20 years running a heritage restaurant in Singapore before he became Singapore’s first licensed food tour guide and the republic’s World Food Travel Association ambassador. Ayam Curry Kapitan
- this mildly spicy chicken dish embodies centuries of migration to and trade around the Malay Peninsula by Indians, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British. Find out how it got its unusual name!

Nyonya Chap Chye - a must-have braised veggie stew at any Peranakan meal. A Straits Chinese chop suey which packs a flavorful punch with cabbage, carrot, mushroom, wood ear fungus, lily buds and blended fermented bean paste.

Nasi Ulam - this special herbed rice dish is rarely found outside home kitchens these days. Chef Lionel makes his with low-GI basmati rice and his own blend of veggies, 6 spices and herbs, like lemongrass, various gingers, long beans and dessicated coconut.

Joo Chiat Jelly Gin Surprise - Chef Lionel's cocktail rendition of the famous Katong Jelly drink which will bring smiles and fond memories to long-time residents of Singapore's East Coast. They will remember Samy, the hawker peddling this delicious refreshing drink from his shiny silver pushcart around the neighborhood! (non-alcoholic Joo Chiat Jelly Surprise mocktail option available)

Ordering guide:

  1. Orders close Sunday, October 18, to give Chef Lionel time to prepare this group meal.

  2. One address per order. Each order can be for several bentos, as long as they are to the same address. To deliver to another address, create a new order. You're welcome to invite friends and family over (subject to prevailing social group size guidelines) to enjoy the talk and food at the same time, or take this opportunity to treat others to the same meal which will be delivered to them! All delivery arrangements will be taken care of for you! All you need to do is provide their names, contact numbers (in the event the delivery driver needs to call them) and delivery addresses.

  3. For those on PayLah/PayNow, you will receive a payment request for the order, so please ensure your mobile number is correct. For those paying by Internet transfer, you will receive payment instructions by WhatsApp. Please ensure payments are made by Tuesday October 20 so that we can place the order with Chef Lionel without delay.
