Book Talk: The Chinese City
Speaker: Weiping Wu, Professor and Director, Urban Planning Program, GSAPP, Columbia University; Vice-President/President Elect, Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning
Today, China’s cities are home to about 10 percent of the world’s population. They display unprecedented dynamism under the country’s surging economic power, and they challenge conventional urban theories and experiences of cities elsewhere. As urban landscape continues to depart from the uniformity of the socialist city, the social and economic exchanges that take place in Chinese cities, and state interventions intended to regulate these interactions, become increasingly complex and at times contradictory.
This talk will address China’s urban transformation and emerging contradictions. Weiping Wu is Professor and Director of the M.S. Urban Planning Program at Columbia University. She is an internationally acclaimed planning scholar working on global urbanization with a specific expertise in issues of migration, housing, and infrastructure of Chinese cities. Her publications include seven co-authored and co-edited books, with her most recent book The Chinese City offering a critical understanding of China’s urbanization.
