Alumni Welcome The Weatherhead East Asian Institute to Singapore

We had a fantastic turnout on July 1st, with over 80 alumni and current students spending an evening with five prominent Columbia professors and scholars for a panel discussion on "Southeast Asia in Regional and Comparative Perspective: What China and the US have to Do With It". Eugenia Lean, the Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, moderated a panel discussion with Xiaobo Lu (Professor of Political Science, Barnard College, Columbia University), Duncan McCargo (Visiting Professor of Political Science, Columbia University), Ann Marie Murphy (Senior Research Scholar, Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Associate Professor, School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University), and Andrew Nathan (Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Department of Political Science, Columbia University).

The professors discussed current issues ranging from Brexit to the US and China's political environment and its impact on Southeast Asia. Quite a few attendees were students of the professors while at Columbia, so it was a nice opportunity for students and professors to catch up over cocktails later in the evening. The Weatherhead East Asian Institute plans to expand its Southeast Asian curriculum and presence, so we look forward to more events in the future.
